The Colorado Master Gardener Program: Planting Gardens, Growing People
The Colorado Master Gardener Program in Eagle County
Eagle County Demonstration Garden
A successful accomplishment of the Colorado Master Gardener Program in Eagle County was to design and install a demonstration and trial garden at the Colorado State University Extension Office. The garden features areas for water-wise, native, Plant Select®, perennial border and edible food crops.
CMG volunteers and CSU Extension staff formed a design team, with a CMG who is a landscape architect drawing up the plans. The garden offers a test site for the lower elevations in Eagle River Valley and works in conjunction with the Betty Ford Alpine Garden in Vail to track plant materials testing and trails across a range of elevations.
Work was accomplished by CMG volunteers, CSU Extension staff, Eagle County Facilities Management, and trustees from the county jail work release program. It was a point of much celebration and good press for the county during a year where much of the news economic and otherwise was challenging.
Donations and/or discounts were made by a variety of local businesses for plants, soil, organic amendments, mulch, lumber, and irrigation supplies.
