The Colorado Master Gardener Program: Planting Gardens, Growing People

CMG Outreach in Larimer County
The Larimer County Farmers' Market

The 2009 Larimer County Farmers’ Market, operated by Colorado Master Gardener volunteers through Larimer County Extension, was very successful.

One vendor in particular shared with me his gratitude and appreciation for the market. Luiz Neves, owner of Café Richesse in Fort Collins, has been selling at the market for three years.  Here is what he has to say:

“As you may know, the farmers’ market is not only a great venue for us (Café Richesse) as a business; it is also a great place to raise funds for Socially Conscious Coffee (SCC), the non-profit which we support.  Through that non-profit, some 70 children grades K-4 get their education, three meals a day and preventative health care on the land where our coffee grows on our farm in Bahia in northeastern Brazil.  This area struggles with endemic poverty, which we are helping to alleviate.

At the Farmers’ Market, where we sell coffee by the pound, we earmark one dollar per pound that we sell there for Socially Conscious Coffee.  According to the director of SCC, contributions from the farmers’ market this season have raised funds for two months worth of food for the children, which is the largest expense.

I write this in part as a “thank you” to you and all those in Larimer County Extension who make this possible.”
